Abstract
There has been growing interest in the evaluation of the impact of research. There are well-established methods of evaluating fundamental research (e.g. number of citations) but the impact of research on policy and practice is more difficult. Similarly, it is often difficult to assess focused research where there are relatively few active researchers. The present paper assesses the impact of the Cardiff research programme on seafarers’ fatigue. Different methods of doing this are described. It is concluded that it is important to consider the impact of research at the start of the project and ensure that appropriate information is collected throughout. An example of this approach is given by evaluating the impact of a recent film on seafarers’ fatigue.
