Abstract
A flowmeter specifically designed to measure fuel consumption of an internal combustion engine was introduced.According to features of the combustion engine, two elliptical gear sensors respectively connected to the inlet and outlet tubes of the engine were employed.Meanwhile, the secondary instrument was developed to display the measuring results. An injection pump test bench and a pump were used in the experiment to verify the effectiveness of the designed system. The experiments were tested in three working conditions of the engine including maximum power, maximum torque, and starting speed, and each condition in the experiment was repeated three times in order to get reliable data. The experimental results show that the flowmeter can work in a stable way,and the relative errors are 0.8% in the working condition of maximum power,0.9% in the maximum torque, and 32.3% at the starting speed separately. However, both the two sensors have internal leakage to some degree, and the leakage decreases with increasing the speed of the pump. Finally, the experimental data helps to improve the measurement accuracy of the system in the following two aspects:designing suitable parameters of sensors including suitable end and tip clearance, and the size of measuring room which should match the engine's power correctly;compensating the error with software, this method is simple but a lot of experiments should be done to get accurately fitted compensation curve.
