Abstract
[Objective] To evaluate the efficacy of local formaldehyde application in hemorrhagic radiation proctitis. [Method] All patients were treated by application of 4 percent formaldehyde to the affected rectal or sigmoid areas under colon endoscope or direct vision. [Result] The study included 7 patients. 2 prostate cancer, 1 recal cancer with local recurrence, 3 cervical cancer and 1 lung cancer with pelvic metastasis. After direct local formaldehyde application all patients' rectal bleedings were obvious descended. [Conclusion] Formaldehyde application is an effective economic and safety treatment for hemorrhagic radiation proctitis. In our opinion, therefore, formaldehyde application should be a primary alternative for severe hemorrhagic radiation proctitis.
