This paper is based upon Text Typology Theory proposed by Katharina Reiss, a famous German scholar and translation theorist. He has divided texts into three type: informative(content-focused text), expressive(form-focused text) and operative(appeal-focused text). Then the present author defines the building names in the Grand View Garden of A Dream in Red Mansions and discussed their translation based on the comparison between two versions respectively by Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes. Through surveying and studying the previous studies, the author puts forward three principles to translate the building names in A Dream in Red Mansions and hopes that this study can be attentive of the researchers of A Dream in Red Mansions.
