Abstract
The hydroxy iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) scan, also known as cholescintigraphy or hepatobiliary scintigraphy, is a nuclear study that outperforms ultrasound for the diagnosis of cholecystitis. However, it exposes patients to radiation, is more expensive, and takes significantly more time. Thus, HIDA has a very limited role in the emergent evaluation of biliary disease.
