Abstract
Acne scarring is a frequent complication of acne and resulting scars may negatively impact an affected person’s psychosocial and physical well-being. While the most effective means of treating acne scars is to prevent their formation through acne control, there are a number of therapeutic options that may improve the appearance of scars that have already formed. In this chapter, we will discuss the use of ablative, nonablative, fractionated, and nonfractionated lasers, dermabrasion, chemical peels, microneedling, subcision, radiofrequency, and dermal fillers for the treatment of atrophic acne scars. Since acne scars are very complex and variable even in an individual patient, the appropriate choice of treatment modality for a given patient should take into account the extent of scarring, type and morphology of scars, as well as the patient’s skin type. Moreover, combination of procedures may be required to obtain the best result as individual patients commonly display more than one scar type.
