Abstract

OBJECTIVE:To analyze the status quo of the current application of expectorants so as to provide references for rational use of drugs in the clinic.METHODS: The mechanism of sputum production,the action mechanism and application principle of expectorants,etc.were evaluated by reviewing the pertinent literatures in recent years at home and abroad.RESULTS CONCLUSION: Expectoration is the common symptom of respiratory diseases.The application of expectorants for the discharge of airway excretion is an important aided measure for treating airway inflammation.When considering using expectorants,the symptom should be evaluated beforehand,and then the importance of etiological treatment should be attached while the expectorants can only be used as adjunctive therapy.We should have an intimate knowledge of the features,indications and contraindication of different kinds of expectorants so as to achieve their rational use.
