Abstract It has recently become possible to automate certain aspects of data analysis in cosmic-ray experiments employing plastic track detectors. This is due to the discovery of a new track detector, CR-39, and the development of fast microprocessor-based image analysers. In this paper, measurements of etch cones made by α particles and fission fragments in CR-39 are described. Estimates are made of the accuracy with which the etch-rate ratio, incidence angle, and track location can be measured under a variety of conditions. Possible applications to cosmic-ray physics are discussed.
