Abstract
For calculation of dominant discharge, four traditional methods are available,bank-full discharge, sediment bed load rate, sediment transport capacity, the frequencies of discharge and sediment concentration. All these methods, however, have shortages in calculation of the Yellow River, which has been shown by an analysis and evaluation of the previous calculations of the dominant discharges in this work. This paper presents a new method based on the coefficient frequencies of flow-sediment relationship.A comparison with the traditional methods reveals that for normal flow period, all the results are quite close to each other, but for the period of flow-sediment variations, only our new method shows good agreement of its dominant discharge calculations with the actual values. This means that medium discharge plays a crucial role in river bed formation. Thus, the method of coefficient frequencies of flow-sediment relationship would provide a valuable technique for study and management of the lower Yellow.
The new method based on coefficient frequencies of flow-sediment relationship accurately calculates dominant discharge in the lower Yellow River, improving river bed formation and study and management.
