Abstract
Realistic Medicine is a creation of the Scottish chief medical officers, initially Catherine Calderwood and now Gregor Smith. It was introduced in the chief medical officer’s report of 2014-15.1 Evidently civil servants were wary of the term realistic medicine—perhaps worried by the implication that there might be too much unrealistic medicine. But the chief medical officers prevailed, and Realistic Medicine has becomean international brand, joining the Welsh Prudent Medicine, the Italian Slow Medicine (based in part on the idea that slow cooking is the best cooking), and the American Choosing Wisely. All share the aims of making care more humane, safer, and sustainable.
