Abstract
In preceding papers 1 have argued that every mental disorder should be classified according to three aspects simultaneously, namely A) Category or gross syndrome; B) Specified main syndrome; C) Main aetiology, pathogenesis, or eliciting factor. The 8th revision of ICD moved in this direction but did not go the full length. Although the three factors were exemplified in the papers alluded to, it was felt at that time that anything like complete lists of items would have burdened the presentation and detracted attention from the principal issue. It is also true that the construction of internationally valid lists will require the collaboration of psychiatrists representing different types of psychiatric services and schools. However, a start has to be made, and the Lists A to C which follow therefore present a tentative draft of such standard lists. A comparison between ICD and the three-fold classification suggested here can be made with the aid of List D and the comments which precede it.
The proposed three-fold classification of mental disorders, based on category, main syndrome, and main aetiology, is a step in the right direction.
