Abstract
Results of neutron diffraction and Mossbauer effect studies of the hexagonal linear chain compound RbFeCl3 are reported for the temperature range 1.2°K to room temperature. Three‐dimensional magnetic ordering is found to occur at TN = 2.55±.05°K. Single crystal neutron scattering results above TN are indicative of one‐dimensional ferromagnetic correlations along the c‐axis chains. Below TN the magnetic moments μ are coupled ferromagnetically along the chains but lie in the basal plane, where they form an antiferromagnetic array. The hyperfine magnetic field Hin also lies in the basal plane and is nearly proportional in magnitude to μ. The temperature dependence of Hin and μ indicates a 0°K saturation value for μ of about 2 μpbeta;.
