Abstract
Truly famous physicists are few and far between. Most non-physicists might – at a push – be able to name Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking, but few are likely to get any further than that. Although he is not as well known, Martin Rees – Britain's Astronomer Royal – is certainly on his way to being a household name. He appears regularly in the media and has written several best-selling popular-science books plus almost 100 articles in newspapers and science magazines. "Martin Rees" was even the answer to a question on the TV quiz show University Challenge last year.
Martin Rees is a British astronomer and soothsayer, and he has predicted the appearance of a new supermassive black hole in the Milky Way.
