Abstract
Three brothers gather back at their family farm – it’s the first time in fifteen years they’ve been home together. Their mother has passed away. For Frederick, it’s a painful step into the past; Martin is happy to be back, but also ready to move on; Reuben has looked after the farm since Dad died, and it is the only world he knows. Mum’s Kitchen is the story of three brothers dealing with memories of the past, their relationships with each other, and the tense and fraught process of organising a funeral. Showcasing the extraordinary vocal talents of international star Nic Kyle and leading New Zealand singers Kyle Chuen and Scot Hall, Mum’s Kitchen is a one-act musical written by David Sidwell, Nick Braae, and Jeremy Mayall. The first performances of this original piece will cover the first half of the narrative from the brothers’ arrival up to the day of the funeral, entailing the tension, drama, and humour that emerges within this time. Music: David Sidwell, Nick Braae, Jeremy Mayall Lyrics: Nick Braae Book: Kyle Chuen, Nic Kyle, Scot Hall Location: Meteor Theatre Performance: 7.30pm, 22-23 August 2019
