Abstract
Emphysema is a condition of the lung characterized by permanent and abnormal enlargement of the airspaces distal to the terminal bronchioles accompanied by destruction of their walls and without obvious fibrosis. Destruction is defined as nonuniformity in the pattern of respiratory air space enlargement; the orderly appearance of the acinus and its components is disturbed and may be lost.
