A Q-band on-chip frequency reconfigurable antenna is implemented in this work. A pair of switches is introduced in this design to enhance the bandwidth of the antenna. An optimized layout of the switch control lines is proposed in this work. It has shown that, with this layout the performance of antenna affected by the metal strips below it can be remarkably decreased. To achieve a higher gain, an off-chip reflector on the bottom of a PCB is placed under this antenna. The space between the antenna and its reflector is optimized by tuning the thickness of the PCB. The proposed antenna has a measured −10 dB bandwidth of 53.4%, from 29.5 GHz to 51 GHz, which covers the whole Q-band. A measured gain of 2.2 dBi is obtained at the center frequency of 40 GHz, while the cross-polarization levels are less than −15 dB in the E-plane and less than −11 dB in the H-plane.
