Abstract High resolution PMR has been used to study the copolymerization of unsaturated polyesters (polydiethylene glycol fumarates) with styrene in the range 20–80°C using benzoyl peroxide-dimethyl aniline as the initiating system. The overall changes in mobility of the system during the reaction has been evaluated from the aromatic proton line width of free styrene. The changes in the numbers of immobilized groups present in the polyester chain were calculated from the decrease of the area of the signal produced by the various chain units. 13 C-NMR has been used to determine the chain structure in the hydrolysate of the hardened polyester; this was found, in the case of polydiethylene glycol fumarate adipate, not to be accompanied by homopolymerization of the fumaric acid chain units.
