Abstract
Abstract The BAM scintillators using benzyl alcohol as primary solvent and PPO as primary solute are considered for routine liquid scintillation counting. The incorporation of water, urine, tissue or gas samples into benzyl alcohol cocktails shows good counting efficiency compared to dioxane, xylene, or toluene based cocktails. Other advantages are their good solubility, high flash point, less toxicity and low cost. The following parameters have been checked: the lower limit of detection, the quench effect, and the chemical stability. Based on our results, the BAM scintillators are recommended for counting large amounts of water, urine, tissue and gas samples.
