Activities, Adaptation & Aging
Abstract
ABSTRACT In the study of activities and their influence in healthy aging, the role of mental exercise has long looked at broad battery approaches to study cognitive performance. This study continued the examination of domain-specific mental exercise. Younger and older adults’ working memory performance was assessed at the beginning and end of a four-month period. During that period both groups regularly played Sudoku puzzles provided by the experimenter. There were improvements in working memory, particularly in digit symbol and letter memory performance. The implications of this study for future, more elaborate longitudinal studies are discussed.
