Abstract
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which causes swelling, oedema, redness, and pain.1 Clinically, the distinction between tonsillitis and pharyngitis (inflammation of the pharynx) is unclear, so it is often simply referred to as an 'acute sore throat'.
