Leafy green vegetables are often recommended for their health benefits, particularly in lowering blood pressure (BP). This effect is thought to be due to their high inorganic nitrate content, which is converted into nitric oxide (NO) in the body, improving cardiovascular function.
A clinical trial involving 243 subjects aged 50-70 with elevated systolic BP (SBP) was conducted to evaluate the effects of leafy green vegetables and nitrate pills on BP. Participants were divided into three groups: one receiving low-nitrate vegetables and placebo pills, another receiving low-nitrate vegetables and nitrate pills, and the third receiving leafy green vegetables with high nitrate content and placebo pills. After five weeks, the study found no significant difference in the change in 24-hour ambulatory SBP among the three groups. This suggests that neither leafy green vegetables nor nitrate pills significantly reduce BP in individuals with elevated BP.
Innovative green hard capsules were developed using corn nano-starch (CNS) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). These capsules were reinforced with CNC to improve their tensile strength, which increased by 238.10% with a 6.0% CNC content. Despite a slight reduction in transparency, the capsules maintained a transparency level above 87.0%.
The capsules demonstrated excellent dissolution properties, completely dissolving in artificial gastric juice within six minutes, meeting the standards of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2015). This makes them a promising option for pharmaceutical applications, combining strength and rapid dissolution.
A study was conducted to compare the therapeutic efficacy of Jiawei Xiaoyao Granules and Pills in treating emotional disorders during perimenopause, using the Greene Climacteric Scale. Seventy-five female patients were divided into three groups: one treated with paroxetine, another with Jiawei Xiaoyao Pills, and the third with Jiawei Xiaoyao Granules.
All three treatments improved the total Greene score and its factors related to anxiety and depression. However, the difference in efficacy among the three groups was not significant. Notably, the vascular factors improved more in the groups treated with Jiawei Xiaoyao formulations compared to the paroxetine group. Additionally, the adverse reactions were fewer in the Jiawei Xiaoyao groups, making them a preferable option for treating emotional disorders during perimenopause.
The research on green pills and related formulations highlights several key findings. Leafy green vegetables and nitrate pills do not significantly lower BP in individuals with elevated BP. Nanostarch-based green hard capsules show promise due to their enhanced tensile strength and rapid dissolution. Lastly, Jiawei Xiaoyao Granules and Pills are effective in treating perimenopausal emotional disorders, with fewer adverse reactions compared to paroxetine. These insights contribute to the understanding and development of green pill formulations for various health applications.
