Appraisal Theory(AT)has further developed the Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL)and is concerned with the linguistic resources by which texts/speakers come to express,negotiate and naturalise particular inter-subjective and ul-timately ideological positions.This paper tries to apply AT in contrastive analysis of English address by Rogge and Chinese address by Liu Qi in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in order to prove its significance in address and embody its great explan-ative force.It proves that AT is a good tool to investigate and analyze discourse.

Appraisal Theory (AT) is a useful tool for analyzing discourse in English and Chinese addresses, revealing the intersubjective and ideological positions expressed in each language.
