Abstract
Withdrawal emergent dyskinesia: case report A 65-year-old woman developed withdrawal emergent dyskinesia, after withdrawal of aripiprazole [route not stated]. The woman, who had a history of bipolar I disorder, was receiving treatment with aripiprazole 5 mg/d, trazodone and citalopram. Aripiprazole was switched to quetiapine. She reported to have euphoric mood and reduced need to sleep, flight of ideas, increased talkativeness and paranoia, at a 2 weeks follow up. A significant tongue rolling and lip smacking was also noted, which started after 10 days of switching aripiprazole. Her abnormal involuntary movement scale (AIMS) score was 17. The dose of quetiapine was increased. At 4 weeks follow up, the woman showed no abnormal movements. Her manic symptoms resolved along with the AIMS score of 4, after increasing the quetiapine dose. Author comment: "Withdrawal dyskinesia in the absence of a history of TD is a common symptom of antipsychotic discontinuation or dosage reduction after long-term use of an antipsychotic."
