Abstract
The diastema is the interdental space located between adjacent teeth in the upper or lower dental arch, which is part of normal development during the mixed dentition period. This anomaly of the occlusion is caused by the disproportionality between the size of the jaws and the size of the teeth, and may also be due to the absence of dental eruption, often of genetic, hereditary origin, less frequent cause and the habit of sucking, making the teeth move away or become dislodged due to excess space The need for treatment of diastemas is essentially due to aesthetic and psychological reasons, and not exactly to problems emitted. Treatment options are multiple, and most cases can be solved with orthodontic treatment. The correction of diastemas implies a well elaborated evaluation and that the professional is qualified to perform the procedure, and should always inform patients about the correct treatment for closing the diastema. Therefore, the aim of the study was to present a review of the literature on the general aspects of the diastema, highlighting it as possible forms of treatment. The results of the advanced studies that the diastema has several diagnoses, and various treatments according to the etiological factor, revealing that an early intervention is desirable in cases with large diastemas, thus identified and received, being able to achieve excellence and patient satisfaction. In conclusion, the treatment of the diastema depends a lot on its precise diagnosis, since each patient has a different etiology, thus being able to achieve a stable and lasting result.
