Abstract
This study analyzes identity in El Paramito, a rural community in the Andean mountains of Venezuela. We used ethnographic methods and discourse analysis. We observed, by studying the discourse of Paramito inhabitants, that they consider themselves indigenous because of their links to original indigenous groups, their attachment to their ancestral territory, as well as by their traditions. This idea is sustained by the value of common land ownership, as well as by customs and practices such as religious and everyday visits. Mythical beliefs about arcs and elves support our view.
Inhabitants of El Paramito, a rural community in Venezuela, consider themselves indigenous due to their connections to original indigenous groups, attachment to ancestral territory, and traditions, supported by common land ownership and customs.
