Abstract
Fluorine, with ground state electronic configuration [He]2s^22p^5, is the first member of the halogen series (Group 9) in the periodic table. It also has the second smallest atomic radius after hydrogen (r_w = 1.47 and 1.20 Å, respectively) and it is the most electronegative element in the periodic table; electronically, fluorine is more similar to its neighbor oxygen (Pauling scale: χ(F): 4.0 and χ(O): 3.5) than other halogens.
