Abstract
Rubidium (Rb+) has been used for many years in the control of endogenous depression (Meltzer et al. 1969; Fieve et al. 1971; Fieve and Meltzer 1974; Sarteschi et al. 1984), despite the fact that its mechanism of action is still unknown. In fact, it has been found to produce therapeutic effect in 65% of patients with endogenous depression (Carolei et al. 1975); also in bipolar patients Rb+ was shown to decrease both the duration and severity of depressive episodes (Fieve 1976).
Rubidium shows different effects from lithium on phosphophatidylinositol metabolism in a human neuroblastoma cell line, suggesting a potential role in treating depression and bipolar disorder.
