Abstract
The efficacy of kanamycin sulfate in the treatment of bacterial infections in surgical patients was described in 1960.' Patients (163) with infections of operative wounds, soft tissues, peritoneum, respiratory tract, urinary tract and the blood stream caused primarily by staphylococci and Gram-negative bacilli were usually successfully treated with kanamycin. The toxicology and pharmacology as well a s the limitation of usefulness were discussed a t that time. The present report represents a re-evaluation of kanamycin therapy based on further extensive use of the drug in the treatment of a variety of infections. This report will include a discussion of the following points: 1. Route of administration and dosage. 2. Pharmacology. 3. Antibacterial spectrum. 4. Clinical observations. 5 . Present assessment of the efficacy of kanamycin in the treatment of infections due to Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria encountered in surgical patients and indications for its use, based on our own experience as well as the reports of others.
Kanamycin sulfate remains effective in treating surgical infections caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with a re-evaluation of its use and indications needed.
