2-Chloro-5-methylthiophene (1) is a versatile intermediate for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.A facile and low-cost route for the preparation of 1 was reported through the reaction of 2 methylthiophene with sulfuryl chloride.The process produced the product in 73.96% yield.

This study presents a facile and low-cost method for preparing 2-Chloro-5-methylthiophene with 73.96% yield from 2 methylthiophene and sulfuryl chloride, useful for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
