The commercially available 7-methoxy-α-tetralone was subjected to bromination, reduction and protection respectively to obtain the tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivative compound whose conversion into the title compound tetralone was accomplished in three steps (methylation, deprotection and oxidation).

This efficient synthesis of 7-methoxy-8-methyl--tetralone can be achieved by modifying commercially available 7-methoxy--tetralone, achieving tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivative, and oxidation.
