However, like many medications, metformin is not without its side effects. Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, which can lead to poor compliance among patients.
An intriguing case study highlights a potential link between metformin and insomnia. A 45-year-old female patient, newly diagnosed with diabetes, was prescribed metformin (500 mg/day). Within three days of starting the medication, she experienced severe insomnia. Despite psychological evaluations showing no underlying issues, her insomnia persisted until she switched to a different medication, glibenclamide.
