Diarrhoea and Cold Symptoms: Insights from Recent Research
Cold Hypersensitivity and Paroxysmal Diarrhoea
Cold hypersensitivity can lead to a range of systemic reactions, including paroxysmal diarrhoea. In one unusual case, severe systemic reactions, including diarrhoea, were observed following cold exposure, such as swimming. This case suggests that the symptom complex may not be due to a hypersensitive reaction to histamine, as treatment with Benadryl hydrochloride did not modify the response to cold .
Cold Urticaria and Systemic Symptoms
Cold urticaria (ColdU) is another condition where exposure to cold can trigger systemic symptoms. Patients with ColdU may develop wheals, angioedema, and generalized cutaneous lesions. Up to 30% of these patients experience systemic symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, respiratory distress, or even anaphylaxis. ColdU can be either familial or acquired, with the latter sometimes being secondary to underlying causes such as infections or drugs .
Stress, Gastrointestinal Dysfunction, and Cold/Flu Symptoms
Acute psychological stress is known to exacerbate gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction and increase susceptibility to cold/flu symptoms. A study on healthy undergraduate students found that stress was positively related to diarrhoea, indigestion, reflux syndromes, abdominal pain, and the intensity of cold/flu symptoms. Supplementation with galactooligosaccharides (GOS) was shown to reduce GI dysfunction and the percentage of days with cold/flu symptoms. Specifically, 2.5 g of GOS consistently lowered the symptom intensity score, while 5 g was effective primarily at lower stress levels. This suggests that GOS supplementation can mitigate the adverse effects of stress on both GI and cold/flu symptoms .
Conclusion
The interplay between cold exposure, stress, and gastrointestinal symptoms is complex. Cold hypersensitivity and cold urticaria can lead to systemic reactions, including diarrhoea. Additionally, stress exacerbates GI dysfunction and increases the likelihood of cold/flu symptoms. Interventions such as GOS supplementation show promise in reducing these symptoms, highlighting the importance of managing both environmental triggers and psychological stress to maintain overall health.
