Influence of First Language and Task Type on Textual Borrowing

Textual borrowing, or the use of words from source texts in one's writing, is a common practice in academic research. A study examining this phenomenon among undergraduates revealed significant insights into how first language and the type of writing task influence word usage from source readings. The study involved 87 university undergraduates, including native English speakers and Chinese students learning English as a second language. The participants were divided into two groups: one group completed a summary task, while the other wrote opinion essays. The findings indicated that students who undertook the summary task borrowed more words from the source texts compared to those who wrote opinion essays. Additionally, Chinese students were more likely to use source texts without proper citation, regardless of the task type .

Lexical Choices in Empirical Research Writing

An exploration of these patterns revealed that the vocabulary used in empirical research articles is influenced by the standards and conventions of scholarly activities within each field. This study systematically identified and verified patterns of specificity in vocabulary use across ten disciplinary fields. The results showed that the conventions of each field significantly affect the lexical decisions made by authors, highlighting the importance of adhering to disciplinary standards when composing research papers .
