Abstract
E HAVE RECENTLY become interested W in a new intravenous anesthetic adjuvant, the sodium salt of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, also known as 4-hydroxybutyrate: l-OH-CH,-CH,-CH,-CONa or HOCH,CH2CH2-CO-Na. The drug was synthesized by Laborit and associates13 from butyrolactone, in an attempt to find a molecule similar in configuration to butyric acid and gamma-aminobutyric acid, but more freely mobile across the blood-brain membrane.
