Abstract
This chapter summarizes the most important uses of dimethyl carbonate, as solvent and reagent. Dimethyl carbonate as solvent is used in novel applications related to supercapacitors, lithium batteries and other emerging devices for energy storage. As reagent, dimethyl carbonate exhibits dual behavior as methylating and carbamoylating reagent depending on the substrate, reaction conditions, and the catalyst present. Emphasis is made on recent developments to replace industrial processes based on phosgene, particularly for polyurethanes, by dimethyl carbonate.
