Abstract
QUININE SULPHATE has been used for many years for the treatment of malaria, muscle cramp, and as an abortifacient. The side effects are often of a very serious nature and may occur in two ways: (i) as a sensitivity reaction, affecting the skin (Sulzberger et alii, 1961), red cells (Freedman et alii, 1956) or platelets (Ackroyd, 1958), and (ii) as a direct toxicity reaction due to overdose, which may affect the gastro-intestinal tract, central nervous system, the retina and the cardio-vascular system (Taggart et alii, 1948; Goodman and Gilman, 1965).
