Abstract
Abstract Hemodynamic effects of trimethaphan camphorate (1 mg. per milliliter), a short-acting ganglion blocking agent, sodium nitroprusside (60 μg per milliliter), a vasodilator, and diazoxide (300 mg.), a thiazide congener and vasodilator, were administered intravenously to hypertensive patients. Each drug significantly reduced arterial pressure, but the immediate reduction by diazoxide returned toward pretreatment levels after 20 minutes. The hypotension observed with each agent was associated with reflexive increase in heart rate, but only diazoxide increased cardiac output and left ventricular ejection rate. These results indicate that nitroprusside and trimethaphan can achieve similar hypotensive effects to diazoxide but without additional myocardial stimulation.
