Abstract
Abstract Lanthanum (La) oxides have potential applications as high k dielectric materials, catalysts and phosphor materials. In the present study, La(OH) 3 nanowires and La(OH) 2 (NO 3 ) microboards were synthesized. Hexagonal phase La 2 O 3 was obtained by post-thermal annealing of the nanowires and microboards, but the morphology changed significantly to aggregated particles. Their physicochemical properties were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) crystallography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible absorption, differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric (DSC/TG) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Hexagonal phase La 2 O 3 was found to be unstable under ambient conditions and changed to more stable hexagonal phase La(OH) 3 .
