Abstract
N-isopropyl-2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol dicarbamate (carisoprodol) is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant that differs from mephenesin and other relaxants in several respects. It is particularly effective in releasing decerebrate rigidity but is only a weak strychnine antagonist. It produces high voltage, low frequency brain wave patterns and blocks electroencephalographic activation. At the same time, like atropine, it is without effect on consciousness or behavioral arousal. Carisoprodol relieves pain produced by injection of joints with silver nitrate but is not very potent in other pharmacological tests for analgesia. Carisoprodol also differs from meprobamate in not affecting hippocampal seizures.
