Abstract
Abstract Positive approaches to parenting have been recommended for nearly a century but are still not always employed. This chapter describes positive approaches to parenting and the reasons they are endorsed in addition to discussing the difficulties in implementing them. Research supports the power of positive parenting and nurturing environments in the prevention of negative outcomes for children. Typical children, as well as special needs children, do better physiologically, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally when parents use positive strategies of child management. Positive parenting leads to better outcomes for parents as well as children. Parents are advised to take time to understand their children and their levels of development when making parenting decisions. Case examples and practical suggestions are given along with the evidence in support of positive parenting.
