Abstract
Attachment theory captures the unique patterns of infant behavioral responses with primary caregivers, usually mothers and fathers, and how these behavioral patterns develop into internal working models. Internal working models define all future relational responses to important individuals. They influence the formation of a self and how that self experiences the world at large. Parenting styles reflect how a parent disciplines and socializes a child. Childhood adversity is a result of maladaptive family functioning such as abuse (physical, sexual, emotional), neglect (physical, emotional), and family dysfunction (divorce, mental illness, addiction, imprisonment, domestic violence). They are associated with long-term negative consequences. Adverse childhood experiences add to the psychological pressures beyond the demands of performing, especially for performers who remain unresolved regarding their past childhood maltreatment.
