Abstract
Summary: Poly(propylene) (PP) films containing differentconcentrations of bis(benzoxazolyl)stilbene (BBS) havebeen prepared by melt processing. We demonstrate that theemission characteristics of PP filmsdepend on BBS concen-tration and polymer deformation. A well-defined excimerband is observed with more than 0.2 wt.-% of BBS, con-ferring to the film a green luminescence. During drawing(1308C) the PP reorganisation breaks theBBS excimer-typearrangement, leading to the prevalence of the blue emissionof the single molecules. We have efficiently applied thephotophysics of this commercial stilbene derivative to theproduction of powerful tools acting as an internal probe forPP deformation.Picture of oriented PP/BBS-0.5 film taken under excitationwith a long-range UV lamp (l¼366 nm).
