Abstract
In a number of infectious diseases of the eye chemotherapy has become such a well-known part of the treatment that we seldom remember the time only a few years ago when the sulphonamide drugs were introduced in clinical treatment for the first time or the uncertainty of that period as to the choice of drug, dosage and method of application. When the water-soluble sulphonamides, after being tested clinically, had proved to be suitable for local treatment of certain eye infections and to be well tolerated by the patients, an investigation was performed in 1943 by Neerdam & Lawztz on the use of the watersoluble sulphonamide derivative Alfasol AB ( a 40 % acquous solution of 2 [ p(sodium-a-ethanesulphonate) aminobenzenesulphonamide] thiazole) for intrabulbar treatment of experimentally produced intraocular infections of rabbit’s eyes. For these experiments*) we used the method devised by G. Ronne. According to this method a suspension of a virulent bacterial culture of varying concentration was inoculated in altogether 54 rabbit’s eyes. The result of the experiments was that i t was possible to counteract or inhibit the infection when the treatment was commenced at an early stage, while the
