Abstract
Several carbamates, e. g., isopropyl N-phenyl carbamate, are known to be mitotic poisons (cf. Morrison 1962). Ethyl carbamate "urethane" cyclohexyl carbamate (Battaglia 1949) and 2, 3-dichloroallyl diisopropyl thiolcarbamate "Avadex" (Morrison 1962) lead to inhibition of mitosis. N-methyl-l-naphthyl carbamate (I), marketed under the name "Sevin" possesses broad insecticidal activity and is effective in controlling cotton insects, e .g., boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis), pink boll worm (Pectinophora gossypiella) and cotton aphid (Aphis gossypiella) (Bottger et al. 1958). It possesses low mammalian toxicity and has a wide margin of safety from phytotoxicity (Haynes et al. 1957). Sevin is widely used in Egypt in controlling cotton insects; study of its cytological effects is, therefore, highly indicated. In the present work, the effects of Sevin on mitosis have been investigated.
