Abstract
Of the forty-six patients with disseminated sclerosis, 26 underwent electrostimulation (ES) of muscles, 20--transcutaneous electrostimulation during the period of subsidence of exacerbation of the demyelinating process. Polarography for determination of oxygen tension in muscles, water clearance, tetrapolar rheoplethysmography and rheovasography were all used to objectivize effectiveness of the treatments performed. Considerable improvement was recordable in 21, and improvement in 17 of the patients. No one of these exposed to the treatments above manifested aggravation of the relevant parameters of their pathology. ES was found to have a favourable effect on the restoration of functions of the brain and spinal cord. Estimators of patient-days showed decrease by 2 to 4 days compared with those cases on conventional treatment. Muscle ES and transcutaneous ES have been recommended for use in a multiple-modality treatment of patients during the period of subsidence of exacerbation of disseminated sclerosis.
