Abstract
Abstract Proton magnetic resonance spectra at 220 MHz of mesoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester, deuteroporphyrin IX dimethyl ester, and protoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester are sufficiently resolved to show clearly that all of these compounds have surprisingly low symmetry. An examination of the concentration dependence of the spectra has made it possible to assign chemical shifts to all of the protons in the three porphyrins. Concentration effects are shown to be more important than those of temperature. Applications of these findings to isomer identification are mentioned.
