Abstract
Fluorescein is a dye commonly employed within ophthalmology. I t is used in applanation tonometry, for lacrimal examinations, for fitting contact lenses, and for diagnosing corneal lesions, among others. Further, given intraveneously, it serves for investigating intraocular tumours, the blood aqueous-humour barrier, etc. I have shown in a previous study that fluorescein differs in staining properties from the other vital stains (Norn 1962). Microscopic examinations of mucous threads and epithelial scrapings revealed that fluorescein stains neither cells nor mucus, while Rose Bengal stains both cells and mucus, and alcian blue mucus alone. The object of the present work has been to analyse clinically the staining properties of fluorescein, especially in relation to presence of degenerate cells and mucus.
