Abstract
A kinetic study of the cerium(IV)-bromous acid reaction in acid sulfate solution using stopped-flow techniques is reported. The empirical rate expression is -d(Ce(IV))/dt = k/sub HBrO/sub 2//(Ce(IV))(HBrO/sub 2/). The values of k/sub HBrO/sub 2// are very sensitive to the distribution of cerium(IV) among various sulfato complexes; Ce(SO/sub 4/)/sub 3//sup 2 -/, the predominant species in 1.5 M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, appears to be unreactive relative to disproportionation of bromous acid. The implications of this study for the Belousov-Zhabotinskii oscillating reaction are discussed. The results of a brief kinetic investigation of the cerium(IV)-chlorous acid reaction are summarized.
