Abstract
The polarographic behaviour of ethyl thioglycollate HS-CH2COOC2H5 has been studied in 40% ethanol media at the dme in the pH range 1.50–12.66, using different buffers in presence of 0.1 M KNO3 and 0.002% Triton X-100. A single well defined irreversible anodic wave was obtained, which shifted towards more negative potentials with increase in pH. The E12 values obtained at different pH were used to evaluate the dissociation constant of sulphydryl group; the pK value has been found to be 8.20. The effects of various factors, viz concentration, drop time, temperature and ethanol concentration on the wave characteristics have been investigated. The values of kinetic parameters—the formal rate constant k°b,h and transfer coefficient α have been calculated by Koutecky's method and are 1.542 × 10−5 cm/s and 0.32 respectively.
