Designed Monomers and Polymers
Abstract
L-aspartic acid is a multifunctional amino acid that was used to synthesize five novel poly(amide-hydrazide-imide)s. The polymers were able to adsorb heavy metal cations such as Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn. The affinity of these polyhydrazides for uptake of two toxic Pb and Cd cations was more than the others. The polymers were characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and elemental analysis. The inherent viscosities of the polymers were found to be in the range of 0.32–0.46 dl/g. Their specific rotations were positive, ranging in value from +8.18 to +20.34. These poly(amide-hydrazide-imide)s exhibited high thermal stability.
